Pricing labels are shorthand. They tell you roughly how a tool is sold, but not what you will be able to do with it. Here is how to read each one and what to confirm yourself.

Free

A free tool can be used without a subscription. That does not promise unlimited use or that it will stay free. Check the terms for usage caps, commercial use and how your uploaded content is handled. The directory page for Free AI tools lists tools labeled this way.

Freemium

Freemium means a free plan with paid upgrades. The free tier is usually enough to test the core idea, with limits on volume, quality, projects, seats or features. See Freemium AI tools for tools in this group. Use the free plan on real work and watch how fast you approach the limits.

Free trial

A trial gives full or near-full access for a limited time, often with a payment method required. Before you start, note the end date, whether it renews automatically and how to cancel. Do your most important tests early so the trial period is not wasted.

Paid

Paid tools charge from the start, by subscription, by usage or by seat. A paid label does not automatically mean better quality. Compare it with the time it saves, and check whether there is a refund window or a monthly option before committing to a year.

Open source

Open-source software has publicly available code and can often be self-hosted, which gives you control over data. The trade-off is that you may carry the costs of hosting, setup and maintenance. Check the licence, since some allow commercial use only under conditions.

What to verify for every model

  • How usage is measured: credits, minutes, documents or requests.
  • Whether outputs can be used commercially.
  • Which features sit behind the paid tier.
  • Whether you can export your work and delete your data.
  • What happens to your projects if you downgrade or cancel.

A simple habit

Screenshot or save the plan details on the day you sign up. Providers change plans often, and having the original terms makes it easier to notice what changed and decide whether the tool still fits.
